One of One | Scottish Wrought Iron | Forged in France & Finished in Sakai

In November of 2026, Franki and myself went to see the crew from Baba Hamono in Sakai to see if they'd be interested in doing a collab with an international knife maker. Simon's name came up during dinner one night. His jet black kurochi and Nishida's finish was a very exciting thought.

Hand forged in France by Simon Maillet, the blade features a 1.2442 carbon steel core clad in Scottish wrought iron. Rich in texture, history, and natural variation, the wrought iron gives the blade an unmistakable character that simply cannot be replicated with modern cladding materials. Every subtle line and irregularity within the iron becomes part of the identity of the knife.

But the blade's journey did not end in France.

After forging, it was sent to Sakai and entrusted to Kagekiyo, where it was finished and sharpened by Sho Nishida of Baba Hamono.

The result is exceptional.

Nishida-san's finishing work brings remarkable refinement to the raw character of Maillet's forging. A deep black kurouchi finish dominates the upper portion of the blade, creating a dramatic contrast against the exposed Scottish wrought iron and meticulously finished bevel below.

Rustic and refined at the same time, the finish preserves the unmistakable character of a hand-forged blade while showcasing the precision and restraint for which Sakai craftsmanship is renowned.

Completing the piece is a custom takedown handle crafted from maple and bog oak.

Designed to be removable, the handle adds another layer of individuality to the knife, combining the natural warmth of maple with the deep, aged character of bog oak. The contrast beautifully complements the dramatic black kurouchi and wrought iron blade.

Forged in France. Finished in Sakai.

Two knife-making traditions. One truly unique blade.

I'd like to give a HUGE thank you to Simon, the Baba Hamono crew and Franki for making this happen <3
